In my lifetime I have watched a lot of Bob Barker. I have always liked to watch The Price is Right. I remember watching it with my mom when I was young she would yell prices at the contestants (she still, to this day, secretly believes they can hear her, Im telling you) and we would discuss the showcases, deciding whether we would bid or pass. Ive never been able to, but I cant deny that more than once Ive wanted to play Plinko and spin the giant wheel.
Over the years I watched less and less, since I wasnt home during the day so much. Every summer vacation when I was younger Id get my fix, but when I was older and summers meant hanging out with friends and working, I had less quality time to spend with Bob. The news that he was retiring made mea little nostalgic for the old days, and I wondered who on earth could fill Bobs loafers? Who could hold that skinny mic?
I was terrified when I heard Rosie ODonnell might take that spot, because I, personally, have had about all I can take of her for a lifetime. When they announced Drew Carey as the replacement, I was curious. I like him well enough, but it would be hard to replace Bob. As Im writing this Im watching Drews first episode, which I DVRd because I just had to see it. Drew is not Bob, but not bad. He had all game winners, he had two $1.00 spinners, but what he does not yet have is that practiced ease that Bob had, that one would certainly have after 35 years of handing out new cars.
Overall, I think Drew will do OK. I mean, the show has survived the loss of Rod Roddy and his replacement, Old Whats-His-Name, so maybe it can live without Bob. Drew may not hold that mic with as much grace, and we have yet to see him do an inspiration putt, but already Im Bobs Favorite Beauty and other such T-shirt slogans have been replaced with Cleveland Rocks so maybe America is ready for Bob-free bidding.
Come on down, and lets keep the Price alive.
