Tonight, Wednesday, April 28th is once again 31cent scoop night at your local Baskin Robbins.
This is their 4th annual event and they are partnering with National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The Baskin Robbins Community Foundation will donate $100,000 to the non-profit organization. Customers will also be able to donate to their own local community firefighters at each shop.
“When there is an income tax, the just man will pay more and the unjust less on the same amount of income.” Plato
So here’s the thing, here in the US, every April 15th, we’re all forced to pay our share back in taxes. Knowing what a dreaded task chore this can be for so many of us, many businesses offer up their own version of “tax relief”. I love how this year, some of the companies are extending their deals beyond early morning.
We hope this helps lesson the pain.

54 million packages of 27 different over-the-counter medications have been recalled.
It’s reported that there’s a must, moldy odor coming from the packages. At least 70 people have become ill with nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. The symptoms do go away by themselves and no one has been seriously injured.
Products include various types of child and/or adult Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, St. Joseph Aspirin, Rolaids, and Simply Sleep. This adds to the 6 million packages of Tylenol recalled late last year, bringing the total number of recalled products to 60 million.
The FDA says Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Health Care knew of the problem for more than a year. When the company did act in November and December 2008, it did too little too late, said Deborah M. Autor, director of the FDA’s Office of Compliance.
Specific products included in the recall include:
Children’s Motrin
Children’s Tylenol
Extra Strength Tylenol
Regular Strength Tylenol
Tylenol 8 Hour
Tylenol Arthritis
Tylenol PM
Benadryl
Motrin IB
Rolaids
Simply Sleep
St. Joseph Aspirin
A complete list of the recalled products, including package sizes, product types, lot numbers, and UPC codes, can be seen at www.mcneilproductrecall.com. Consumers with question can call McNeil directly at 888-222-6036.
Consumers who think they may have suffered ill effects from the products should contact the FDA at www.FDA.gov/medwatch.
I’m by now, we all know the many and various ways we can use baking soda outside of the kitchen, beyond just cooking and cleaning. There’s also those many uses for lemons, such as: using a lemon to freshen up a slimy, stinky garbage disposal; or to remove the limescale from your faucet; or using lemons to exfoliate your feet or elbows; or even using lemon juice to repel both weeds from growing and cats from peeing in a particular spot.
Let’s face it, there are myriad of ways to use many different everyday, household products other than the ways you may have originally thought.
More and more it is important that we focus on conserving our resources. In light of this being Earth Day and with our minds set on reusing and recycling, be sure to check out AltUse.com. The founders of AltUse.com believe that a “radical overhaul in product usage is of extreme importance.”
The goal of AltUse.com is to tap into the collective intellectual capital of the world to provide a solution to this pressing issue. AltUse.com will facilitate sharing of alternative use information to help consumers save money, minimize waste and maximize product value. We seek to be a catalyst for changing the way companies manufacture and market consumer goods by challenging the notion that products should be created for one specific purpose. Our proprietary ranking system accelerates access to the data.
So take a moment and poke around and see what you might be able to reuse or recycle in your home. I know I’ll be reusing my leftover coffee grounds to make my own body scrub – mix leftover cooled grounds with a little brown sugar (4:1) and about a tablespoon of oil. The caffeine not only helps to revive the skin and break down cellulite (or so I’ve heard), but it also smells delicious.
In 1971, President Nixon once said “I’m not for women in any job. I don’t want any of them around. Thank God we don’t have any in the cabinet … I don’t think a woman should be in any government job whatever. I mean, I really don’t. The reason why I do is mainly because they are erratic. And emotional. Men are erratic and emotional, too, but the point is a woman is more likely to be.”
From those early days of the suffragettes right on through to our current generation of young women, the world has shown great change. Treatment of women however often varies from country to country. In many countries, women still need permission from their husbands to work outside of the home. Globally, there is still a large gap in gender pay to say nothing of the lack of women politicians. Women do two-thirds of the world’s work but receive only 10% of the world’s income and own less than 1% of land.

Every year, on March 8 thousands of events are held around the world to celebrate and honor women and our achievements – rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women’s craft markets, theatrical performances, fashion parades and more. What’s happening in your neighborhood?
International Women’s Day is now an official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. In some countries the day is celebrated much as we here in the US celebrate Mother’s Day, with small gifts, cards and flowers. While the US does not have an official holiday, we have designated the month of March as ‘Women’s History Month’.
If you start to change women’s lives, there is a virtuous cycle that begins to improve everything else. I am more convinced than ever that the more women hear stories about other women, the more they will step up and help other women. ~Shelia C. Johnson, Global Ambassador for CARE International
Today (Thursday, March 5th), in support of International Women’s Day, “A Powerful Noise” will be shown simultaneously in 450 theaters across America. This is more than just a film – it is a catalyst for change and a compelling reminder that the solution to global poverty and injustice lies in the ability of women and girls to have a voice in their societies. It will be followed by a panel discussion with leading thinkers on women and poverty.
“A Powerful Noise” Live is presented by CARE, ONE and NCM Fathom during the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women. Tickets went on sale January 30th. Click here for participating theatres and ticket information. Join your voice with thousands of others at this event and together our message that “women are the solution” will be heard loud and far. At www.apowerfulnoise.org, you can find ways to join the effort to empower women, as an advocate, as a volunteer, or simply through public displays of support.
Are you a US History buff? Have you ever wanted to see a copy of Rosa Parks’ arrest certificate? What about Elliot Ness’ Oath of Office swearing to uphold the Constitution while going after Al Capone? Can I interest you in a letter from Walt Disney to President Nixon requesting an interview? Or maybe Bob Hope’s first curtain call? What about the Homestead paperwork from Laura Ingalls Wilder and her husband’s first home together in the Dakota Territory?
If pieces of American history interest you then you’re in luck. The National Archives has been slowly uploading pieces of America’s history into their Digital Vault. This project was two and a half years in the making and they officially went live a year ago, in February 2008. They currently have 1200 images and many images are multiple pages in length. The Vault includes documents, photographs, posters, letters, sound recordings and moving images all hand selected from the National Archives. It allows visitors to get a behind-the-scenes look into the archives.
Suzanne Isaacs, the digital project coordinator for the National Archives Experience made sure to point out that these archives aren’t a search engine, they’re more like an exhibit – “one that is different each time you visit, encourages creativity and allows you to share your creations with others through email.” They aren’t displayed in a static exhibit format, nor are they organized chronologically or by category. The easiest way to find something particular is to search using either keywords or tags.
The site is said to “mimic historical research in that it insists on and encourages visitor exploration.” Users can also access the archives to create personal movies and posters using the images in the vault that can be shared with others via email – this could be a fun idea for a special birthday celebration or a class project.
Consider yourself warned though, once you start poking around, click on some of the tags and create your “path”, you’ll be on there for quite some time. It truly is both awe-inspiring and fascinating (history can often be like that). And it’s a fun way to kill some time…but you didn’t hear me say that
8 million are expected to foreclose over the next five years
Scott Pelley reports on the mortgage crisis that’s far from over, with a second wave of expected defaults on the way that could deepen the bottom of the U.S. recession. Whitney Tilson explains that sub prime mortgages are just the start of our foreclosure woes and we’re still only halfway through the bursting of the mortgage bubble. We still need to be concerned about the All-Day and Option Arm mortgages.
